Each year as part of the NAHB International Builders’ Show, The New American Remodel™ (TNAR) program selects an existing home to undergo a comprehensive remodel to showcase the latest in cutting edge building techniques, materials, designs and technologies. This year’s TNAR project took a dated 1950’s ranch-style property in downtown Las Vegas and transformed it into a modern, energy efficient and high-performance home that features the latest in design and sustainable construction technology.

The 5,200 square foot state-of-the-art home designed and engineered by Nevada-based Luxus Design Build, LLC was built to exceed the requirements necessary to achieve Emerald status from the National Green Building Standard for its net-zero energy consumption. TNAR 2019 was built using sustainable building techniques and high-performing yet affordable products to create a low energy thermal envelope with outstanding performance and improved air quality.

Luxus and studio g ARCHITECTURE chose Kingspan Kooltherm Premium Performance Insulation and GreenGuard RainDrop 3D Building Wrap to help achieve a HERS index of -13, which is 113% more efficient than average newly built homes that are up to code. Due in part to the tightly sealed building envelope, the home’s high level of energy efficiency will now afford the homeowner more than $5,000 in annual energy savings.

Builders used Kingspan Kooltherm Premium Performance Insulation continuous exterior insulation system to create an unvented and air sealed attic. Kooltherm is a premium performance rigid thermoset fiber-free phenolic insulant manufactured with a blowing agent that has zero Ozone Depletion Potential and low Global Warming Potential. The extensive range of insulation products for wall, floor, soffit / structural ceiling and concrete sandwich wall system applications, are easy to handle and install, and provide reliable, long term thermal performance. With an R-value of up to 17 per 2 inches, Kooltherm is the thinnest commonly used insulation product.

To keep the home dry and well insulated, Kingspan GreenGuard RainDrop 3D Building Wrap was used. GreenGuard RainDrop 3D is a cross-woven polyolefin building wrap designed to provide an air and water-resistive barrier and drainage medium where optimum barrier performance and drainage behind wall cladding is required. The building wrap is the ideal weather barrier under siding, stone, stucco and brick, featuring innovative drainage channels that will not crimp, collapse or flatten, no matter how tightly siding is nailed to the wall.

“Overall, we were very impressed by both of Kingspan Insulation’s products used on TNAR 2019,” said Drew Smith, Chief Operating Officer and Energy Consultant for TNAR 2019. “Kooltherm was very easy to install which essentially made the installation a one-step process. Its high R-value increased the home’s overall R-value dramatically. GreenGuard RainDrop 3D helped to add an additional air and water barrier, making the home air tight and more energy efficient overall.”
