PENETRON Makes for Healthy Concrete at GCSU Wellness Center

 

The recently opened Georgia College Wellness Center in Midgeville, GA (U.S.A.), provides students with a holistic approach to health: an environmentally-friendly structure with a range of health activities and services. PENETRON materials were a key part of the Wellness Center’s LEED certification.

Comprehensive Health & Wellness

The new $29 million, 101,000-square-foot (9,400m2) facility at the West Campus adds needed space for student fitness, recreation and intramural sports, along with student health services and counseling. It spans three floors and includes:

  • 25-yard swimming pool, recreational pool, and warm water therapy pool
  • Indoor running track, two-court gym, and multi-purpose court
  • Fitness center, weight room, and climbing wall
  • Areas
for Student Health Services and the GCSU Counseling Center

The project was designed to achieve LEED Silver certification, the first on the GCSU campus. One of the sustainable project features is a water recycling system (with basement storage tanks) for use in the Wellness Center pools, restrooms and indoor plant life.

Optimizing Concrete Durability

PENETRON ADMIX was specified by the construction team for the storm water recycling system. It was also incorporated into the pool structures that were fabricated using PENETRON ADMIX-Enhanced Shotcrete (PAES) technology. The PENETRON ADMIX was easily added to the shotcrete at the time of concrete batching; the concrete materials were applied to the walls and slabs of the structures using pneumatically-applied shotcrete techniques. PAES allows more flexibility, higher in-place densities, lower permeability and ease of application.

The PENETRON ADMIX makes concrete impermeable to water penetration by developing crystals in the natural microscopic openings in concrete (pores and capillaries). This also eliminated the use of VOC-containing or tar and rubber-based linings, which contributed to the LEED certification of the health facility.
