Taking it public with CableRail cable railing

March 20, 2019

On the surface, the reasons for selecting cable railing for public spaces seem obvious. The sleek, streamlined cables work with a variety of architectural styles – including traditional, contemporary and industrial – and can be used in both outdoor and indoor settings. With its clean lines, cable railing is also unobtrusive, helping to open up and preserve the view.

But cable railing’s benefits extend beyond that. In addition to its aesthetic properties, cable railing is engineered to withstand harsh weather and environmental challenges while also being easy to install and requiring very minimal maintenance. This is especially important in public spaces, which experience more wear-and-tear than private spaces.

Constructed of eco-friendly, marine grade stainless steel, Feeney’s CableRail not only provides unimpeded views, helping to create the illusion of a larger area, but adds an extra layer of safety. From landscaped areas found in parks, zoos and botanical gardens to theme parks and museums to boardwalks and observation decks, cable railing hits the mark when it comes to public spaces.

Following are two projects that demonstrate how cable railing can be a great railing solution for public venues.

Written in the Stars

Project engineers at the Kennedy Space Center in Merritt Island, Florida, were seeking a railing solution that was at once attractive and durable. They were tasked with installing railing along a 450 foot ramp and pathway that takes park visitors through the historic Rocket Garden, which winds past rockets from the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space missions. Due to a limited footprint, it was crucial that the railing offer an unimpeded view of the Rocket Garden and surrounding area. The engineers selected Feeney CableRail, which perfectly complemented the gently curving railings that encompass the pathway.

Going Natural

A local design firm was hired to revitalize the atrium of the Interpretative Center at the Myrick Hixson EcoPark in La Crosse, Wisconsin. One of the additions to the atrium was a round timber staircase leading up to a newly constructed mezzanine area. Since the woodwork throughout the center uses native tree species such as ironwood, American elm, and red and white oak, the designers wanted to ensure the railing they chose wouldn’t detract from the natural elements in the atrium. They opted to install Feeney’s 3/16” stainless steel CableRail assembly on the stairs and mezzanine, which allowed the organic design to take center stage.

It’s easy to see why cable railing is the solution of choice for public projects. Versatile, durable and strong, the cable and fittings are constructed of marine grade 316 stainless steel, making them highly resistant to corrosion and virtually maintenance free. Moreover, cable railing is ideally-suited for a broad range of architectural styles while providing a stylish and unobtrusive railing option that will maintain its beauty for many years to come.
