Radiation Shielding and Nuclear Energy for AI Data Centres

AI data centres are driving a new wave of electricity demand that’s pushing owners, planners, and engineers to look harder at clean power sources. The International Energy Agency says electricity generation used to supply data centres is projected to grow from 460 TWh in 2024 to more than 1,000 TWh by 2030. At the same time, the IAEA notes that major tech companies are actively looking at advanced nuclear technologies such as small modular reactors (SMRs) to meet rising power needs. As various SMR designs mature, obtain regulatory approvals, and become practical options for large-scale AI power supply, the question becomes what it takes to provide optimal radiation shielding solutions for SMRs and new nuclear reactors without compromising safety, compliance, or project timelines.
