Protect and preserve the night time environment and minimize light pollution. To reduce the amount of light pollution, the use of dark-sky compliant lighting fixtures are strongly encouraged, or even required in some locations by municipalities and local communities. The Key to Reduce Light Pollution
To help reduce light pollution, your outdoor lights should:
- Have a clear purpose
- Have a targeted light direction
- Have low light levels
- Have control
- Have a warm color (below 3000K)
The key is not getting rid of lights, but controlling the direction. You can do this by replacing the existing fixtures with dark sky friendly LED lighting. Acceptable fixtures facilitate better vision at night; shielding the light source can minimize glare and light trespass. Most of TerraCast®'s luminaries have dark sky compliant options upon request.
Why is Reducing Light Pollution Important?
Light pollution is everywhere in modern society. As you can see in the light pollution map by darksitefinder.com, almost everywhere in the US is affected by light pollution because of the excessive use of poorly designed light fixtures. Light pollution affects not only the sky but also on our bodies, environment, and surrounding wildlife. By disrupting our internal clocks, hormone balances, and melatonin levels, light pollution can increase health risks such as obesity, depression, sleep disorders, diabetes, and many more. Artificial lights at night disrupt wildlife behavior and result in millions to die every year. Many cities and communities are working on mitigating light pollution while creating a safe and well-lit neighborhood for its residents and wildlife.
